The MPH is an interdisciplinary graduate degree available in two emphasis areas: Health Promotion and Policy or Veterinary Public Health. Graduate Certificate

Certificate description: The certificate in public health communication prepares recent college graduates, mid-career professionals in public health and journalism fields to effectively communicate scientific evidence for public health policies and interventions with lay and professional audiences. Graduates will be prepared to work in health education, hospital public relations, governmental public health administration, non-profit organizations and a variety of other settings. The objective of the certificate are to equip students with a) The principles of public health knowledge, b) The foundations of social and behavioral science in public health; c) Understanding and skills related to public health in news and reporting and audience engagement. The certificate consists of 15 credit hours, including three core courses and two elective courses. Students could finish the program in a year by taking two courses in two semesters and one in the other. Students may apply the course from the certificate to an MPH degree.

Certificate description: The Graduate Certificate in Public Health offers working professionals the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of foundational areas of public health, including biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health and health services administration. Students may earn a stand-alone certificate after twelve credit hours (four courses) or may apply earned credits toward the MPH, should they wish to continue their studies. Certificate students who receive B’s or better in all four courses are automatically recommended for admission into the MPH program.

Certificate description: The Epidemiology Certificate will allow prospective and current students to become competent in advanced aspects of epidemiological analysis such as assessing population groups and determining their priority health problems, empowering and mobilizing populations in a collaborative public health effort. The certificate competencies are:

  1. Articulate key role of epidemiology for informing health issues and in preserving and improving public health.
  2. Appropriately select and use information technology to identify, locate and access health-related data; accurately evaluate the integrity of the data and identify gaps in data.
  3. Analyze data arising from epidemiologic studies using appropriate software.
  4. Interpret the output of regression models from standard statistical programs and present the results in research papers and project reports.
  5. Evaluate outcome-based research on public health interventions for its potential use in public health practice.
  6. Develop skills in communicating community assessment and intervention findings to lay audiences.
