Writing Success: Verb Tense, Verb Choice and Hedging Expressions in Academic Writing
When discussing other researchers’ contributions to the field we vary in our choice of verbs and verb tenses; these choices demonstrate how a researcher’s contribution relates to the present research field. We combine these choices with “hedging” words and phrases to add the nuance that express our attitudes towards their validity. These small changes in word choice, tense or construction can help you more clearly express your ideas and attitudes as a research writer.
Each academic year, ITAP offers free workshops to help international graduate students develop the skills they need to be more successful. Workshops are free, but students need to register to make sure they have a seat. To receive more information about these workshops, to find out about additional undergraduate-led workshops about oral language and cultural issues or to register, join the Blackboard ITAP Cares Student Organization.
